Jacaré Romero Cavalcanti

Born in 1952 in Rio de Janeiro, Jacare began his BJJ training at 11 years old. At the age of 16, he joined the famous Gracie School in Copacabana where he learned under Rolls Gracie. Jacare grew up in the same neighborhood as the Gracie Family, so he was able to meet and train with many of the family members, among them: Carlos Gracie Jr., Crolin Gracie, Fabio Santos, Mauricio Gomes, the Machado Brothers, and Rickson Gracie. From 1972 to 1985 Jacare competed extensively and worked as an Assistant Instructor at the Gracie School. In 1982 Jacare Romero was awarded his black belt by Rolls Gracie; he was the final black belt the legendary martial arts figure made, the last of an elite group of 6. After the tragic death of Rolls Gracie that same year, Carlos Gracie Jr. (Rolls younger brother) picked up as the instructor. In 1985 Jacare opened his first school in the infamous suburb of Ipanema. He soon became one of the most respected Instructors in Brazil, going on to found and coach the famous Alliance Team, a powerhouse in BJJ. Among many of the important titles the Alliance Team has won are its Eleven World Championships (1998/1999/2008/2009/2010/2011/2012/2013/2014/2015/2016). Alliance is home to World Class Fighters like Fabio Gurgel (four time World Champion), Marcelo Garcia, Bruno Malfacine, Fernando “Terere” Augusto, Bernardo Faria, Gabi Garcia, Luanna Alzuguir, Fernando Gurgel, Alexandre “Gigi” Paiva, Felipe Neto, Rubens Charles “Cobrinha” Maciel, Lucas Lepri, Tarsis Humphries, Michael Langhi, Fernando “Soluco” de Piero, Ian McPherson, Rafael Rosendo, Chris Moriarty, Babs Olusanmokun, Sergio Moraes, Antonio “Batista” Peinado, Vlad Williams, Ed Kennedy and many others. Jacare attended school in New York in the 70's and came to love this country like his own, and for this reason he moved back to the US with his family in 1995 and opened his first school in Miami, Florida. He later moved to Atlanta in late 1996 and quickly established a very successful school. He soon developed a solid team of competitors like Bull Shaw, Elijah Gardner, Ron Miller, Jason Miller, Ryan Ellison, Damien Stely, Jeff Joslin, Pat Harvey, Kenny McClendon, Chad LeBrun, and many others.
